Songwriter of the Month: Candice Nokes 08/13/2010
![]() Click pic to hear Candice's nominated song Congrats to my friend Candice Nokes for her songwriting nomination in the Indian Summer Music Awards. Her song A Whole Long While is a finalist in the blues category, along with tunes by Victoria Blackie (Salt Lake City), Quatisi (Nashville), Bluedog and Asani (Edmonton, Alberta). The song is on Candice's latest CD, Earth and Sky, which collects a number of recordings she's made over her career (she started writing songs in 4th grade). Her music falls into the progressive folk genre but her wide range of influences (she lists Paul Simon, Steve Perry, Sinead O'Connor, Ella Fitzgerald, early Beatles, Hildegard Von Bingen, Suzanne Vega and KT Turnstall on her website) guarantees there will always be surprises in store for listeners. The nominated song, for instance, was originally recorded for the debut CD by the Lost Pioneers band in Milwaukee. "A Whole Long While was written with the East Side as the song's cityscape, during a formative period in my life," she says. "It was recorded in a Milwaukee studio with Milwaukee musicians. This is a proud moment." Hear the song and get the backstory Sample all the tracks on her Earth and Sky CD More Songwriters of the Month Comments are closed. |
