Busy going through “my back pages” getting some new/old things ready for Bandcamp release. Here's the latest:
Sample from Thunderbird, the first release in my new 4-Track Cassette Reclamation Project series. Originally released on cassette in 1992, this was my first album of guitar-based instrumental music, and has long been out of print.
The second release in my 4-Track Reclamation Project series is 50¢ Millionaire, recorded with my drumming/songwriting buddy Bob Mueller way back in 1986-87 and out now for the first time in 2023.
2022 marked the 20th anniversary of my album The Sons of Distortion, now available for streaming and download for the first time.
Curated a new collection of my favorite tracks from my days with the Bean Hoy band. One is Go Beater Car Go, featuring my pal Jared Drake on harmony vocals.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of my experimental spoken word/found sound/original music album The Noise Museum, the original stereo cassette mix has been restored and optimized for digital release on Bandcamp.
Alternate remixes of the soundtrack to my film The City at Night are now available on my Bandcamp page.
My friend and creative collaborator Brett Huus and I finally got around to releasing this jazzy gem that had been lingering in the vault. This is dedicated to the memory of our friend Gene Purcell (1960-2021).
Backwaters is my suite of six loosely linked guitar ensemble pieces inspired by living in the Upper Mississippi River valley in Wisconsin's Driftless Region. With this album we are also helping to raise awareness and funds for the Friends of the La Crosse River Marsh. They're a nonprofit group that volunteers their time to help preserve the wetlands of western Wisconsin and maintain the well-used and well-loved nature trail system that offers a great escape right here in the middle of the city.

Mike Starling's original music is heard on numerous recordings and soundtracks, and his stories and photos have been featured in books, films, mags and other media. Among his other interesting career moves, he has edited a beer magazine, played bass in a reggae band and sold potato chips door-to-door.
